Or in another word, except Philips and Panasonic projectors, all other projector brands purchase lamps from special lamp makers. Keep this in mind, that’s important for you to save money in choosing projector lamps. Projector lamp market historyProjector lamp is ultra-high pressure lamp, which is developed by Philips in 1995.
The short form of Ultra High Pressure, UHP, is registered by Philips as a trademark. Although Philips is the first one to develop ultra high pressure lamps, but it is not the only major supplier of projector lamps. Projector lamp market is an oligarchy market, which means only a few players. There are mainly 6 suppliers:Philips (trademark: UHP)Osram/Sylvania (trademark: P-VIP) EYE/Iwasaki (trademark: HSCR) Panasonic, Matsushita (trademark: HS, UHM) Phoenix (trademark: SHP) Ushio (trademark: NSH, UMPRD, NSHA) For every projector lamp (I mean original, not those compatible), you may notice a trade mark printed on the lamp. Besides the six trademarks above, you may found different trademarks printed on original lamps, such as UHB on Hitachi lamps or UHE on Epson lamps.
But those are OEM lamps, made by the above 6 lamp factories, not made by Hitachi or Epson. Initial market and after marketThe lamps provided for making projectors in production lines belong to initial market, while replacement lamps belong to after market. To ensure quality, all projector makers use lamps from one the six suppliers in above. However, in after market, there are plenty of choices, most are from China. There are more than 100 lamp “factories” (or lamp workshops) from China, although their price is cheaper, but quality makes a big discount.
Comparing to the 6 initial lamp suppliers, the Chinese lamps brightness is only 50% and lamp life is only 20-30%. Original lamps VS. Original OEM lamps VS. Compatible lampsHere we come to an important point, what are the differences between the three lamp types. Original lamps are those directly from the projector brand seller.
Such as directly from Dell or Epson or etc. There are too many projector brands, most of them are losing money, that’s why many big names disappear from projector market in recent years, such as HP, Toshiba, Mitsubishi, etc. Although many quit the market, but there are still more than 100 brands. Those manufacturers want the profits from replacement lamps, just as printer manufacturers want the profits from replacement ink jet cartridges. That’s why original lamps are so expensive.
Original OEM lamps are lamps in after market, but directly supplied by the 6 initial lamp makers. Is it difficult to understand? Take an example, you have a HP computer, which CPU is supplied by Intel and you want to change your CPU. You can either buy directly from HP or from Intel’s vendors. Although performance is exactly same, but price of CPU from Intel’s vendor is much cheaper.
The role of original OEM lamp supplier is similar to Intel’s vendor, same performance, but much cheaper. I make a table below to show it.Compatible lamps are those from China, their main selling point is price. However, considering brightness and lamp life, it is a question whether it is worth to buy a lamp which may hurt your projector. You can decide which parts you need:1) If your lamp housing or the glass on it is dirty, but the lamp looks new, you can change the lamp housing only (you can take a picture to us to see whether to change housing or lamp);2) If you want a cheaper solution, you can buy the compatible lamp from China, which brightness is 50% of original one and lamp life is 25-35% of original one;3) But we recommend you buy the original OEM lamp, which brightness and lamp life is same as your existing one, much worthy than the compatible. That means when you receive a lamp, which will be from Philips or Osram such big names.
Exact performance as your existing one.4) In case we don't have lamp with housing, you can buy a bare lamp only. If you don't know how to install, we can send you a video to show. It is very easy, just to loosen several screws. Quoted from Philips:"Next to the important quality process of the manufacturing of a UHP lamp, it is important to know that when Philips delivers a UHP lamp to an OEM to create a projector or rear projection television, this always is delivered together with a (high voltage) ballast. The system (lamp & ballast) is jointly developed and interacts with each other to ensure the picture on your screen is flatter-free and colour reproduction is excellent.
Philips has extensive release procedures in development and production to ensure the correct working of a specific lamp type with ballast, guaranteeing on optimal television or projection experience. Replacing the lamp will allow your product to perform like it was new." We’d suggest you to buy one more air filter, which can prevent dust into the projector. For Phoenix lamp, in after market, its code is either SHP or GL. The reason given by Phoenix is that on confusion for initial or after market.
